Goals
Ø
To learn how to listen to jazz.Ø
To understand how jazz is performed.Ø
To examine major jazz styles that have evolved during the twentieth century.
Course Objectives
In order to meet these goals students will
Ø
participate in class discussions on assigned reading materials.Ø
develop an understanding of the elements of jazz music and music terminology.Ø
develop critical listening skills through repeated hearings of historic jazz recordings during class.Ø
demonstrate an understanding of various jazz styles and instrumentation through listening exams.
Assignments
Students will be required to complete the following assignments:
Ø
attend each class meeting.Ø
read assigned materials for each class meeting and participate in class discussions.Ø
listen to jazz recordings and participate in class discussions relevant to the recordings.Ø
a class presentation on a jazz musician that includes recordings, photos and biographical information.

Attendance and graded assignments will be weighted as Follows:
