HISTORY of JAZZ

Course Syllabus

Goals

Ø To learn how to listen to jazz.

Ø To understand how jazz is performed.

Ø To examine major jazz styles that have evolved during the twentieth century.

 

Course Objectives

In order to meet these goals students will

Ø participate in class discussions on assigned reading materials.

Ø develop an understanding of the elements of jazz music and music terminology.

Ø develop critical listening skills through repeated hearings of historic jazz recordings during class.

Ø demonstrate an understanding of various jazz styles and instrumentation through listening exams.

 

Assignments

Students will be required to complete the following assignments:

Ø attend each class meeting.

Ø read assigned materials for each class meeting and participate in class discussions.

Ø listen to jazz recordings and participate in class discussions relevant to the recordings.

Ø a class presentation on a jazz musician that includes recordings, photos and biographical information.

 

Course of Study

Ø 9/12-11/03 How to Listen to Jazz, 9/19- assign presentation topic

Ø 11/7-12/16 Elements of Jazz Music

Ø 1/3- assign presentation topic

Ø 1/19- present to the class

 

Grading

Attendance and graded assignments will be weighted as Follows:

Ø Assigned reading: 20%

Ø In-class Listening and Discussion: 30%

Ø Attendance: 20%

Ø Class Presentation: 30%
